The main purpose of technologies is to transform the human environment to better adapt it to the needs and desires of man. Natural resources and people who provide information, labor and market for activities are used in this process.

For many years the industrial and technological needs have been satisfied without paying attention to the possible damages caused to the environment. However, today these damages are known and the first steps to reverse them are already being taken.

Human activities, from the obtaining of a raw material, to the disposal of the waste generated after obtaining a technological product, can have serious consequences for the conservation of the environment. Some examples are desertification, the environmental impact of technology, pollution produced in the treatment of many raw materials and waste generated by industrial activities.

«We need an environmentally friendly technology. The world needs an awareness of environmental care. Technology affects little compared to all the damage that other elements do to the environment. However, it helps a lot to reduce much of the pollution with the tools it has, ”says Juan José Dell Acqua, executive director of the Argentine Association of Users of Information Technology and Communications.

It is in this framework that Green Technologies or Green IT appear. They refer to the efficient use of computing resources, minimizing the environmental impact, maximizing their economic viability and ensuring social duties. It not only identifies the main energy-consuming technologies and producers of environmental waste but also offers the development of ecological computer products and promotes computer recycling.

Information and communication technologies are today a fundamental piece in the fight against climate change and the sustainability of the planet. The extension of its technologies influences and transforms the way in which society as a whole operates, work habits, social relations and facilitate the reduction of excessive consumption of raw materials and energy.
