The Softbank Group Corp firm introduced two new chip designs, better than those already on the market, that can handle artificial intelligence tasks on mobile devices.
Arm Ltd., of Softbank Group Corp., introduced new chip designs that can handle more artificial intelligence tasks on mobile devices, reducing dependence on large remote data centers.
The Cortex-M55 and Ethos-U55 provide voice recognition, gesture detection and other artificial intelligence capabilities to small and energy efficient chips that are often sold for less than a dollar, according to Dipti Vachani, head of automotive business and the Internet of things. The M55 is an update of a design that is already on devices like Amazon.com Inc.'s Echo smart speakers, according to Arm.
Most artificial intelligence work is done in data centers, with information flowing from one side to another between powerful servers and mobile devices over the Internet. This slows reaction times and poses the risk of exposing confidential information of users. The latest Arm designs will do more of these tasks on the devices, reducing cloud dependence, he says.
The most capable chips that are still cheap and efficient should stimulate the creation of new devices, he says. There could be wireless headphones that control your health, a cane for visually impaired people who have a camera and image recognition and the ability to talk to their owner or a robot that recognizes voices and gestures. The designs will also help reduce the cost of moving a lot of data over the Internet, according to Vachani.
