Intel and Google, along with other companies in the computer industry and environmental organizations, presented an initiative to introduce computers that use energy more efficiently and thus fight the climate change that the planet is experiencing.<\/p>\n

Called the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, this program aims to save $ 5.5 billion in energy costs per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 54 million tons per year.<\/p>\n

This reduction of greenhouse gases that the program could achieve amounts to the elimination of eleven million cars worldwide or the planting of trees on an area of \u200b\u200b65,000 square meters.<\/p>\n

The initiative, which also involves AMD, IBM, Dell, e-Bay, HP, Fujitsu, Lenovo, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems, among others, will urge companies to manufacture equipment and components that optimize the use of electricity, as well as tools for the management of energy consumption worldwide.<\/p>\n

\"Today an average PC wastes almost half of its energy and a server wastes a third,\" said Urs Holzle, one of Google's vice presidents.<\/p>\n

The program will follow this year the Energy Star guidelines of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the efficient use of energy in appliances and other devices.<\/p>\n

Energy Star standards require that computers have an efficiency of at least 80 percent in the use of the power supply: the new project would raise the minimum to 90 percent by 2010.<\/p>\n
